The square
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface — ten feet by ten. Roofers measure, price, and order in squares: total roof area divided by 100. A 2,400-square-foot roof is 24 squares. Every figure on this wall hangs off that one unit.

Room I
One hundred forty years, in seven exhibits.

Exhibit 01 — 1886
The Standard Paint Company is founded in a remodeled sawmill in Bound Brook, New Jersey, with 18 employees — among them a young chemist experimenting with asphalt compounds.
Exhibit 02 — 1892
Standard Paint launches RU-BER-OID ready-to-lay roll roofing, widely credited as the first ready-to-lay asphalt roll roofing. GAF’s own history dates the launch to 1892.
Exhibit 03 — 1921
Standard Paint takes the name of its flagship product and becomes The RUBEROID Co.

Exhibit 04 — 1967
RUBEROID engineer Phil Bottoli laminates two strip shingles together, creating Timberline — the first laminated shingle, which GAF says became North America’s best-selling shingle. The same year, RUBEROID merges with General Aniline & Film — the letters G‑A‑F — and the combined company adopts the GAF name in 1968.
Exhibit 05 — 2011
GAF becomes the first roofing manufacturer to offer a Lifetime Limited Warranty across all of its laminated shingles — a first per GAF.
Exhibit 06 — 2020
GAF launches Timberline HDZ shingles powered by LayerLock technology, which mechanically fuses the common bond between shingle layers — and introduces the WindProven limited wind warranty, the industry’s first wind warranty with no maximum wind speed limit.
Exhibit 07 — 2022
GAF Energy — the solar roofing business launched by Standard Industries in 2019 — debuts Timberline Solar, featuring what it calls the world’s first nailable solar shingle, unveiled at CES 2022 where it won a Best of Innovation award.

The assembly
Deck → deck protection → leak barrier at the vulnerable lines → starter at the edges → the shingle field → ridge vent → caps. Open a numbered plate to inspect a layer; the rest of the roof steps aside.

Room III
The black streaks on a roof are blue-green algae — Gloeocapsa magma. Copper inhibits it. StainGuard is GAF’s algae-resistant treatment: per GAF, copper-containing granules blended into the shingle surface; StainGuard Plus uses what GAF calls time-release copper microsites. The bundle label governs which warranty applies — 10 years for StainGuard, 25 for StainGuard Plus.

Room V
Roofers speak in squares, shingles ship in bundles, and roofs are not rectangles.
100 ×4 +15%
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface — ten feet by ten. Roofers measure, price, and order in squares: total roof area divided by 100. A 2,400-square-foot roof is 24 squares. Every figure on this wall hangs off that one unit.
The trade shorthand is three bundles to the square, and for GAF’s Timberline HDZ generation it holds — 33.3 square feet per bundle, per GAF. The stocked Timberline Ultra HD packs differently: GAF’s product information sheet lists four bundles per square — 16 shingles per bundle, 25 square feet each. Count four, not three, or the order lands a quarter short.
Shingles ship as rectangles; roofs are not. Every hip, valley, and rake ends a course in an angled cut, and the offcut is scrap. Industry estimating guides put typical waste at 10 to 15 percent, higher on cut-up roofs. A straight gable earns the low end. Nothing earns zero.
Count four, not three for the stocked Timberline Ultra HD — the three-bundle shorthand belongs to the HDZ generation. Check the coverage printed on the bundle label.
Room VI
Introduced with Timberline HDZ in January 2020. Per GAF, it mechanically fuses the common bond between shingle layers — a wider StrikeZone nailing area and stronger wind uplift performance. It defines the current generation: HDZ and, since 2023, UHDZ. Earlier lines — HD and Ultra HD among them — predate it.
GAF’s 15-year wind warranty with no maximum wind speed — an industry first, per GAF. Eligibility is strict: LayerLock shingles plus four qualifying GAF accessory categories — starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and either a leak barrier or attic ventilation. The stocked Timberline Ultra HD predates LayerLock and does not qualify — if WindProven is the spec, send the list and the desk quotes a qualifying system.
Ownership, not years. Per the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty, coverage runs as long as the original individual owner — or a properly transferred second owner — owns the single-family detached residence where the shingles are installed. Every other owner or building type gets a fixed 40-year term.
The label governs Warranty terms follow the label on the bundle — StainGuard 10 years, StainGuard Plus 25, WindProven only with LayerLock lines.
